Cracking, Flaking Masonry? Call the Chimney Doctor for Expert Repointing, Tuckpointing, and Masonry Repairs in Memphis
Time and the four seasons take their toll on masonry. When you start to spot signs of damage, how you respond can make all the difference. If you simply accept deteriorating masonry as “the way it is,” that damage will gradually worsen. What starts as a hairline crack could grow into a large gap that allows rain, snow, and sleet to enter the masonry structure and cause even more damage. However, if you make repairs while they’re still small, you can prolong the life of your masonry chimney, fireplace, patio, pathway, or retaining wall, and prevent those larger, more costly repairs and rebuilds.
Is your masonry cracking, crumbling, or flaking apart? Have chimney leaks and water damage taken a toll on your chimney and made it an eyesore? Discoloration, cracking, spalling, and other types of masonry damage and deterioration can take a beautiful brick or stone structure and make it unsafe, unsound, and unattractive – but we can help. The Chimney Doctor has over 30 years of commercial and residential masonry repair and restoration experience, and our team can handle any and every masonry repair – big or small. Call us now at 901-388-8097 or contact us online today.

What Is Chimney Tuckpointing & Repointing?
Both tuckpointing and repointing require the mason to grind out portions of the old mortar and clean the joints before moving forward. Next, we’ll carefully color-match the mortar to your existing mortar to ensure strong and beautiful results.
Using a hand trowel, we pack this new, fresh mortar into the damaged or weakened joint and smooth it out to ensure a clean, tight, and strong finish. By tightly packing the fresh mortar into the ground-out joints, we improve the masonry’s appearance, strengthen the structure, and prevent further damage.
In some cases, we may use two different mortars. One is colored to closely match the brick of the masonry, while the other is color-matched to the rest of the mortar joints. For example, if you have larger mortar joints and want them to appear smaller, the brick-colored mortar can be used to thin out the appearance of the joints.
Tuckpointing can also be used when small portions of the brick have flaked or fallen off. We’ll simply pack in a mortar that matches the brick in color for a stronger, more attractive masonry structure.
How Often Should I Have My Chimney or Brickwork Repointed or Tuckpointed?
Brick and mortar may be durable, but exposure to the elements takes its toll over time. Water, temperature fluctuations, and general wear can cause mortar joints to weaken, crack, or crumble. Repointing or tuckpointing restores deteriorating mortar, keeping the chimney stable and preventing further damage.
The frequency of these repairs depends on several factors, including the age of the chimney, the quality of the original masonry work, and environmental conditions. On average, chimneys require repointing every 25 to 30 years, but some may need attention sooner if signs of damage appear. It’s best to schedule a professional chimney inspection every few years to catch mortar deterioration early. Cracked, loose, or missing mortar joints indicate that repointing is needed. White staining (efflorescence), spalling bricks, and water leaks inside the home can also signal mortar failure.
Regular chimney maintenance extends the lifespan of a chimney and prevents pricey structural repairs. By addressing mortar deterioration before it worsens, homeowners can avoid more significant issues, such as leaning or collapsing brickwork. A professional chimney technician from The Chimney Doctor can assess the condition of the mortar and determine if and when repointing or tuckpointing is necessary.
Can Repointing & Tuckpointing Improve the Structural Integrity of a Chimney?
Damaged mortar weakens a chimney’s stability, making it vulnerable to shifting, cracking, and water infiltration. Repointing and tuckpointing strengthen the structure by replacing deteriorated mortar with fresh, properly mixed material, ensuring that bricks remain securely in place. This process not only improves the chimney’s appearance but also reinforces its ability to withstand external forces such as high winds, heavy rain, and freeze-thaw cycles.
Beyond stabilizing the chimney, repointing prevents water from seeping into the masonry. When moisture penetrates a chimney, it can lead to mold growth, rusted components, and interior damage to ceilings or walls. Over time, untreated moisture issues can compromise the entire chimney system, leading to expensive rebuilds. A well-maintained mortar structure keeps water out, preserving both the chimney and the home’s interior.
